Hernando Leopards Advance in District Playoffs with 77-54 Victory Over Mount Dora

The Hernando Leopards (9-15) dominated Mount Dora Basketball (3-21) with a commanding 77-54 victory in the 4A District 6 Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at home in Brooksville. The fourth-seeded Leopards built an early lead and never trailed against the fifth-seeded Hurricanes, advancing to the next round of district playoffs behind strong performances from seniors Michael Brown and Nate Blomberg.

Brown led all scorers with 19 points while adding 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 blocks in the victory. The senior drew first blood for the Purple and Gold, scoring 7 of his team’s first 12 points including two spectacular fast break dunks that resulted from steals moments before. These highlight plays helped fuel an 18-5 scoring run that lasted more than five minutes and stretched into the second period, establishing early momentum for the Leopards.

Hernando Head Coach Jake Gaustad praised his seniors’ recent improvement after the game. “In the last two games, both of those guys have really stepped up,” Coach Gaustad said. “It is their senior year. They want to play. They don’t want to just lose their last game at home. These last two games, we have seen a difference in Hernando basketball, and I hope that we can keep that going.”

The victory showcased balanced scoring throughout the Leopards’ lineup. Senior Joseph Rivera contributed 13 points, 3 assists, and 2 three-pointers, including 7 points during the crucial first-half run. Junior Blake Williams added 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 three-pointers, while junior Tristan Cossin dominated the paint with 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Coach Gaustad emphasized the team effort, saying “I felt like we played unselfish basketball. Blake Williams played great. Tristan Cossin in the paint is just dominant. He gets every rebound that we need.”
