Hernando County School District Athletic Director Dustin Kupcik was named Central Region Athletic Director of the Year in February. Kupcik officially received the honor at the Florida Coaches Coalition and Florida Coach of the Year Conference’s Banquet on Saturday, February 28.
Kupcik was recognized for his leadership in Hernando County and across the region, as well as his work to grow, promote, and shape athletics in the district over the last year. The Central region consists of several counties, including Hernando, Citrus, Sumter, Lake, Marion, Levy, Alachua, Gilchrist, and Bradford counties. As the first to be named to the recently created full-time role nearly 2 1/2 years ago, Kupcik has been in athletic administration since April 2016 and previously served in a similar role at Springstead High School.
Kupcik’s role as district athletic director involves various tasks, including formulating middle school track schedules, supporting other athletic directors with compliance, liability, and travel questions, and general daily troubleshooting. He also speaks with eighth graders about how to be successful at the high school level and is currently helping the district facilities department design new athletic facilities, coordinating EKG screenings, and interviewing potential athletic trainers.
“I am proud to be the voice for student-athletes, coaches and ADs at the District level,” Coach Kupcik said. “Making sure their story is told, making sure their needs and wants are heard.” Kupcik finds the greatest pride in solving problems that will make the jobs of coaches and athletic directors in Hernando County more efficient and enjoyable.
