Hernando County Unveils New Online Development GIS Map

Hernando County unveiled a new online mapping system on January 30, designed to give residents easier access to development and zoning information. The presentation, held at the county’s utilities department, drew about 45 residents, but raised more questions about growth than praise for technology.

Resident Pam Everett said the county provided just enough information to satisfy critics, adding that a two-day notice for the event was inadequate. “As far as letting the community know, to meet the 10-day standard notification, they should at least give us a week in advance,” she said. A media release was sent January 28, for the event. Omar DePablo, the county’s development services director, explained his responsibilities, joking, “You may or may not know what Development Services does. If you do, please let me know because I’m still trying to figure it out.”

The new mapping system, called GeoHub, is supposed to improve public access to zoning and development information. County Administrator Jeff Rogers and Sabrina Dugan of SwiftGov also presented the new technology. However, technical glitches took a while to solve, delaying the presentation.

Despite the issues, the county aims to provide better access to information with GeoHub. More information can be found on the Hernando County website. Residents can also contact the Development Services department for more information.
