Hernando County commissioners voted unanimously on January 29 to pursue a lease agreement with Florida A&M University to operate the historic Chinsegut Hill property in Brooksville. The university’s proposal was chosen over a competing bid from a local preservation group, the Historic Hernando Preservation Society.
Dr. Dale Wesson, dean and director of land-grant programs for FAMU’s College of Agriculture and Food Sciences, presented a five-year plan that would make the university responsible for day-to-day operations of the 56-bed retreat and conference center. The university plans to use the site for faculty and graduate student lodging, workshops for farmers and landowners, and community education programs on water conservation, soil health, and climate resilience. FAMU would charge modest fees to cover maintenance and operations, partner with the Tampa Bay History Center, and expand public access to seven days a week.
The Manor House at the Chinsegut Hill Retreat and Museum in Brooksville is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and serves as the centerpiece for events held on the museum grounds. The property will be operated in partnership with the Tampa Bay History Center, expanding public access and providing educational programs.
Commissioners expressed excitement about the potential for the property, citing the university’s financial backing and commitment to preserving the historic site. The lease agreement is expected to bring new opportunities for education and community engagement to the area.
