Hernando County Commissioners voted unanimously to lift the current emergency burn ban on March 10, after recent rainfall substantially reduced the fire hazard. The countywide ban on burning yard debris and other non-grilling practices, which had been in effect since January 8, was lifted at the Board of County Commissioners meeting.
According to Paul Hasenmeier, Director of Public Safety and Fire Chief, the County remains under “severe drought conditions,” and his department will address the board again if another fire risk arises. The Southwest Florida Water Management District shared a video on March 10 highlighting low water conditions in the district.
The burn ban was initially implemented due to dry conditions that increased the risk of wildfires. However, with recent rainfall, the fire hazard has decreased, allowing residents to resume yard burning and other outdoor burning activities. Despite the lifting of the burn ban, residents are still urged to exercise caution when burning and to follow all safety guidelines.
Residents can find more information on fire safety and burn bans on the Hernando County Government website or by contacting the Public Safety department. For updates on drought conditions and water management, visit the Southwest Florida Water Management District website.
