Florida Education Chief: Student Protests Must Not Disrupt Class

Florida’s education chief, Manny Diaz, said student protests planned over federal immigration enforcement actions must not disrupt classes. The protests were sparked by the shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.

Diaz said, “While I understand the passion and concern that many students have about current events, it is essential that we balance their right to express themselves with the need to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment for all students.” He emphasized that school districts across Florida have a responsibility to ensure that student protests do not interfere with the academic day.

The Pasco County School District, which serves parts of Pasco County including New Port Richey and Hudson, has not announced specific plans for handling potential student walkouts. However, Diaz said that districts should work with students to find alternative ways to express their concerns without disrupting classes.

Students across the state, including in Hernando and Citrus counties, have been organizing walkouts to protest federal immigration policies. The issue has sparked heated debates in communities nationwide.
