On Tuesday night, March 10, 2026, at Emerson Field in Brooksville, Hernando High School’s baseball team defeated Springstead 17-0, thanks in part to a grand slam hit by senior catcher Kaine Ellis. The game was a significant victory for Hernando, with Ellis going 4-for-4 and driving in six runs, including the grand slam that came on a 3-1 count in the first inning.
The grand slam, Ellis’ second home run of the season and fourth of his high school career, capped a wild first inning in which Hernando sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs. Ellis’ performance was part of a 15-hit attack by the Leopards, who were led by senior pitcher/outfielder Austin Knierim and Ellis, whom coach Tim Sims described as “generational players.” Knierim got the scoring rolling with a home run to right field, and junior left fielder Lucas Chafin drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single.
The win is a notable achievement for Hernando High School, which is located in Brooksville, Hernando County. Ellis, who has signed to play at the University of Richmond next season, had one of the best statistical games of his four-year varsity career. The Leopards’ victory brings them closer to securing a top spot in their league standings.
