Dozens of Animals Found Dead in Neglect Case, Floral City Resident Arrested

A Citrus County animal rescue operation turned tragic on January 15, 2023, when dozens of animals were found dead due to neglect at a property in Floral City. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office reported that 43 animals, including dogs, cats, and horses, were discovered deceased at the residence of 51-year-old Lisa Johnson.

According to authorities, Johnson, who operated an animal rescue organization, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and neglect. Deputies say they responded to a tip about potential animal neglect at the property on Northeast 301st Avenue in Floral City around 10:30 a.m. on January 15. Upon arrival, they found numerous deceased animals on the premises.

The investigation revealed that Johnson had been operating an animal rescue at the property, but conditions were unsanitary and animals were not receiving proper care. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information about potential animal neglect or abuse to come forward.

Johnson was booked into the Citrus County Detention Center and later released on $5,000 bond. Her arraignment is scheduled for February 1, 2023.
