Dozens of Animals Found Dead in Floral City, Owner Arrested

A disturbing case of animal neglect has led to the arrest of a Floral City woman, deputies said. On January 15, 2026, Citrus County deputies responded to a report of a large number of dead animals at a property in Floral City. Upon arrival, they found dozens of animals, including horses, goats, and chickens, had died due to neglect.

The owner of the property, 43-year-old Jennifer Lynn Smith, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. According to deputies, Smith had been operating an animal rescue operation at the property, but conditions were found to be unsanitary and inhumane. Deputies reported that many of the animals had been left without food or water, leading to their deaths. Smith is being held at the Citrus County Detention Center.
