A disturbing case of animal neglect has led to the arrest of a Floral City woman, deputies say. On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, Citrus County deputies responded to a report of possible animal neglect at a home in the 900 block of Southeast 4th Avenue in Floral City. Upon arrival, they found dozens of dead animals on the property.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office reported that 53-year-old Lisa Niccole Wootten, the owner of the property, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and neglect. Deputies found numerous dead animals, including dogs, cats, and other small animals, on the property. The investigation revealed that the animals had been neglected and were found dead in various stages of decomposition.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the Citrus County Animal Control and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Wootten was booked into the Citrus County Detention Center and later released on bond. The case is ongoing, and further charges may be filed.
Animal lovers in the community are rallying around the cause, and local animal rescue groups are offering support to those affected by the neglect. Anyone with information about animal cruelty or neglect is encouraged to contact the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office or the local animal control agency.
