A disturbing case of animal neglect has led to the arrest of a Floral City woman, deputies say. On Monday, January 15, 2024, Citrus County deputies responded to a report of possible animal neglect at a property in Floral City. Upon arrival, they found dozens of dead animals on the property.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office reported that the owner of the property, 41-year-old Jennifer Leigh Proctor, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. Proctor’s property was described as a “rescue” operation, but authorities found it to be severely neglected, with many animals dead and others in distress. The investigation is ongoing, and Proctor is being held at the Citrus County Detention Center.
The Citrus County Chronicle reported that a total of 55 animals were found dead on the property, with many more still alive but in need of medical attention. The Humane Society and other animal welfare organizations assisted in the rescue efforts.
