Dozens of Animals Found Dead in Floral City, Citrus County

A disturbing case of animal neglect has led to the arrest of a Floral City woman, deputies said. On January 15, 2026, Citrus County deputies responded to a report of a large number of dead animals at a property in Floral City. Upon arrival, they found dozens of animals, including dogs, cats, and horses, dead and decomposing.

The property owner, 52-year-old Karen Sue Smith, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and neglect. Deputies said they found evidence of long-term neglect and poor living conditions for the animals. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the case and work with local animal welfare organizations to ensure the surviving animals receive proper care.

The case highlights the ongoing issue of animal neglect in Citrus County and the efforts of local law enforcement to hold those responsible accountable. According to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, animal neglect and cruelty cases have been on the rise in recent years, with many cases involving large numbers of animals.
