Dozens of Animals Found Dead in Floral City, Citrus County

A disturbing case of animal neglect has led to the arrest of a Floral City woman, deputies said. On January 15, 2026, Citrus County deputies responded to a report of dozens of dead animals at a property in Floral City. Upon arrival, they found multiple animals deceased due to neglect.

The owner of the property, 52-year-old Karen Sue Weirick, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal neglect. According to deputies, the animals were found in a state of severe neglect, with many having died from starvation, dehydration, or exposure. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.

The Humane Society and other local animal welfare organizations are assisting in the case, and Weirick is being held at the Citrus County Detention Center.
