Deputy, Civilian Injured in Brooksville Traffic Stop Crash on US-41

A Hernando County Sheriff’s deputy and a 69-year-old Weeki Wachee man were injured Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 41 near Grand Entrada Boulevard in Brooksville. The collision occurred at 10:40 a.m. on January 31 when the deputy was attempting to conduct a traffic stop for speeding, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 28-year-old deputy was driving southbound on U.S. 41 and overtaking a vehicle to initiate the traffic stop north of Grand Entrada Boulevard when the crash occurred. At the same time, a Nissan Rogue driven by the Weeki Wachee resident was traveling eastbound on Grand Entrada Boulevard. At the intersection, the Nissan crossed the highway and entered the path of the patrol vehicle, where it was struck by the deputy’s car.

The impact caused the deputy’s patrol car to overturn several times before coming to rest. The Nissan rotated from the collision and came to a final stop in the travel lanes of U.S. 41. The dramatic crash scene required emergency response teams to clear the busy highway intersection during late morning traffic hours.

Both drivers sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the collision and were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has not released the names of either driver involved in the crash. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, including whether the civilian driver failed to yield the right of way to the emergency vehicle.

The crash highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face during routine traffic stops and pursuits. U.S. 41 is a major north-south corridor through Hernando County, connecting communities from Brooksville to the Gulf Coast. The intersection with Grand Entrada Boulevard serves as a key access point for residential areas in the region.
