The Citrus County Commission has put on hold a proposal to rezone land in the Withlacoochee Industrial Park for a data center. The decision was made during a meeting on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 3:00 PM, at the Citrus County Historic Courthouse, 1 SE 1st Avenue, Inverness, Florida.
The rezoning request, submitted by Compass Data Centers, LLC, had sparked concerns among local residents and officials. The proposed data center would be located on approximately 34 acres of land near the intersection of State Road 44 and Southeast 3rd Street, in the unincorporated area of Citrus County. The project would require a zoning change from agricultural to industrial, which would allow for the construction of a large data center facility.
The Citrus County Chronicle reported that commissioners decided to delay the decision to allow for further review and discussion of the proposal. The item is expected to be revisited at a future commission meeting. Residents and officials have expressed concerns about the potential impact of the data center on traffic, noise, and the environment.
No timetable has been set for when the rezoning request will be reconsidered.
