Two aspiring students in Crystal River, Florida, are making their voices heard on school safety. Citrus County Schools is considering returning school policing to the Sheriff’s Office, and students like 17-year-old Alex Johnson and 16-year-old Emily Wilson are paying close attention.
The Citrus County School Board is set to discuss the possibility of reinstating the school resource officer (SRO) program, which was discontinued in 2020. The program would place deputies from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office in schools to improve safety and security. Johnson and Wilson, both students at Crystal River High School, have been actively involved in discussions about school safety and the potential return of SROs.
According to Johnson and Wilson, the students are concerned about the safety of their peers and believe that having a deputy on campus could help prevent incidents. They have been meeting with school administrators and local law enforcement to discuss the issue. The students’ efforts have sparked a larger conversation about school safety in the community, with some parents and residents expressing support for the SRO program.
The Citrus County School Board is expected to make a decision on the SRO program at a future meeting. In the meantime, Johnson and Wilson plan to continue advocating for school safety and exploring ways to improve the learning environment for all students.
