Crystal River Airport Kids Triathlon Awaits FAA Decision

Organizers of the Citrus Kids Triathlon are moving forward with plans to route youth cyclists down the runway at Crystal River Airport, but the event’s most unique feature remains in limbo as they await federal approval. The May 2 race date is approaching, and final authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration is still pending.

Despite the uncertainty, local and state partners have signed off on the concept. Chris Moling, founder of DRC Sports, updated the Citrus County Aviation Advisory Board last week, outlining continued coordination with airport officials, law enforcement, and aviation partners to prepare for the possibility of a runway-based bike course. The proposal would allow older participants, ages 11 to 15, to ride a roughly three-mile course using Runway 9-27 and Taxiway Alpha.

The planning has included discussions with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office about helicopter support, including potential aerial “overwatch” during the race to assist with communications and safety. Organizers are also working to notify regular weekend airport users and coordinate radio monitoring across aviation frequencies.

Moling said conversations with other airports that have hosted similar events have been encouraging. “Everything was very smooth,” he said, referencing the coordination with other airports. “We’re encouraged by that and hoping to get FAA approval in time.” The event is set to take place on May 2 at the Crystal River Airport, adjacent to Bicentennial Park.
