Citrus County Residents Sound Off on Hospital Ratings, Road Safety

On February 26, 2026, a letter to the editor published in the Citrus County Chronicle highlighted concerns about local hospital ratings and road safety. The writer noted that according to Medicare, both hospitals in the area received two-star ratings, which they felt was more accurate than the recently reported B ratings.

The writer also expressed concern about the lack of proper crosswalks and safety measures near Crystal River’s schools, located on Crystal Street. They pointed out that while there is a pedestrian-friendly crosswalk with flashing lights on Three Sisters Springs Drive, the schools lack similar safety features, putting children at risk. The writer questioned why more effort isn’t put into protecting local children, comparing it to the attention given to tourist areas.

Another topic discussed was the prevalence of bad drivers in Citrus County. The writer, who has lived in the area for 10 years and is originally from New England, suggested that the roads’ design for speed and the transient nature of the community may contribute to the problem. They noted that people who aren’t originally from the area may feel less connected to their community and therefore less responsible to one another.

The writer concluded by expressing disgust at the political situation in Tallahassee and Attorney General James Uthmeier’s actions.
