Citrus County Moves Forward with New Animal Shelter

Citrus County is moving forward with plans for a new animal shelter. The project has been in the works for several months, with county officials working to secure funding and find a suitable location.

The new shelter will replace the current facility, which has been in operation for over 20 years. According to Citrus County Animal Services, the new shelter will provide more space for animals, as well as improved facilities for adoptions and animal care. The project is expected to cost around $1.5 million, with funding coming from a combination of county funds and grants.

The Citrus County Board of Commissioners recently approved the purchase of a 5.5-acre property on Southeast 3rd Street in Inverness, which will serve as the site for the new shelter. Construction is expected to begin in early 2024, with a projected completion date of late 2024.

The new shelter will feature a number of improvements, including increased kennel space, a new adoption center, and improved veterinary care facilities. The shelter will also have a larger area for community events and education programs.

“This new shelter will allow us to better serve the animals and citizens of Citrus County,” said Citrus County Animal Services Director, Pam Lewis. “We are excited to move forward with this project and provide a state-of-the-art facility for our community.”
