Citrus County Animal Rescue Owner Arrested for Dead Cats

The owner of a self-proclaimed animal rescue in Citrus County, Florida, was arrested on January 15, 2026, after detectives found multiple dead animals on her property and several more living in “conditions no creature should ever endure.”

According to WFLA, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office received a tip about the rescue, located on 2355 North West 40th Avenue in Homosassa, Citrus County. Deputies found several dead cats in trash bags and numerous living cats in deplorable conditions. The owner, 43-year-old Jennifer Renee Johnson, was taken into custody and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and neglect.

The investigation revealed that Johnson was operating the rescue, called “J.R.’s Rescue,” without proper licenses or permits. Deputies reported finding cats with matted fur, dirty water, and inadequate food. Several cats were taken into custody by the Citrus County Animal Services and received medical attention.
