Brooksville Man Charged with Animal Cruelty After Attacking Pit Bull with Machete

A Brooksville man, 60-year-old Elvin Lugo, is facing a felony charge after investigators say he attacked a neighbor’s dog with a machete on February 9th, leaving the animal seriously injured and possibly blind in one eye. According to the affidavit, a deputy responded to 1117 Gladys Street after receiving a report of animal cruelty.

Lugo told deputies that his neighbor, Elvin Lugo Jr., had been letting his pit bull, Rocky, attack Lugo’s dogs. However, when deputies spoke with Lugo Jr., he denied the allegations and stated that Lugo had attacked Rocky with a machete. The affidavit states that Rocky suffered severe lacerations and may have permanent damage to one eye.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is handling the case, and Lugo has been charged with one count of animal cruelty. He is being held at the Hernando County Detention Center with a bond set at $5,000.

Animal cruelty cases are taken seriously in Hernando County, and residents are encouraged to report any suspected cases to the authorities.
