On January 15, 2023, Citrus County deputies searched a self-proclaimed animal rescue in Citrus County, seizing multiple animals found in what authorities described as “horrifying” conditions. The search warrant was executed at “Hess Haven,” a property that was allegedly operating as an animal rescue.
Deputies found numerous animals, including dogs, cats, and horses, living in squalid conditions, with inadequate food, water, and shelter. Body camera footage from the search, released on January 16, 2023, shows the deplorable conditions in which the animals were kept. “I’ve been doing this for 16 years, and this is one of the top five that I’ve seen in our county as horrific,” said Citrus County Sheriff’s Deputy Gallant.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the conditions at Hess Haven. Charges are pending against the property owner, whose name has not been released. The animals seized during the search are being cared for by local animal welfare organizations.
According to WFLA, the property was not licensed as an animal rescue, and authorities are investigating possible animal cruelty charges. The case is ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
