A Frigid Florida Winter Hits Hernando County and North Pasco

A prolonged cold front has brought freezing temperatures to Hernando County and North Pasco for over a week, starting January 27. Although not record lows for individual days, the persistent chill is noteworthy. On January 31, tiny snow flurries were spotted, but mostly melted immediately. The possibility of snow 10 days prior had generated widespread excitement and conversation.

The cold weather led to many residents staying indoors, unaccustomed to the frigid temperatures. On February 1, the NHL held a Stadium Series outdoor hockey game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa between the Lightning and the Boston Bruins, where they had to heat the ice to maintain optimal temperature. The high winds and cold weather also caused the Kumquat Festival in Dade City to be postponed to March 8. By the end of the week, nighttime temperatures had risen above freezing, remaining cool but without causing damage to plants.
