76-Year-Old Hernando Woman Arrested for Keeping Dozens of Cats in Squalid Conditions

A 76-year-old Hernando County woman was arrested on March 16 after dozens of cats were found in squalid conditions at her home.

According to the Citrus County Chronicle, deputies with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a large number of cats at a residence in Brooksville, Florida. Upon arrival, they found 49 cats in various stages of health and nutrition, with some appearing emaciated and others deceased. The cats were seized and taken to a local animal shelter for care. The suspect, whose name was not released, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and neglect.

In related news, the Cold Weather Shelter will be open on Monday and Tuesday nights, March 16 and 17, for individuals in need of a warm place to stay. The shelter will be located at the Hernando County Emergency Management building, 801 S. Highland Ave., Brooksville.
